4 Easy Ways to Give Your Dog a Pill
We know most dogs aren’t always the happiest to take their pills. To try to make it easier for you and your dog, we listed here some good and sneaky ways to make sure they take their meds and stay healthy and happy as can be:
The smellier the better!
The point is to disguise the pills odor in a super smelly food, like cheese or ground meat. Butter is pretty bland, but it might do the trick since it’s rich and slippery. Cover the pill in the smelly food and make sure it’s just the right size for it to slip down their throat so they don’t have to chew it.
The quicker the better!
Try throwing your dog delicious treats one after the other. Sneak a pill into the lineup and hope your dog doesn’t notice!
The tastier the better!
Check if the medication you have to give your dog comes in flavored forms. Dogs sometimes think of it as a treat in itself and take it just like that!
Medisafe tip: Ask your vet or a compounding pharmacist if they can custom a dog’s medication to a flavor your dog likes. Note that this can’t be done with all medications and it costs more too, so maybe try this one if no other tips work out.
The more they are distracted the better!
Try giving the pill when your dog is most distracted, like when you two go on a walk outdoors. Your dog will be occupied by all of outdoors wonderful smells and will hopefully not notice when you give the medication.
