Myeloma is a rare blood cancer that affects many Medisafers and we wanted to take some time to spread the word. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Myeloma? <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myeloma is a hematological (blood) cancer that develops in plasma cells<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The body makes too many plasma cells which results in less space for healthy red and white blood cells as well as platelets<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myeloma is the 2nd most common blood cancer (the first being non-Hodgkin lymphoma) <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prevalence? <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30,280 new cases in 2017 in the US<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.themmrf.org\/myeloma-awareness-month\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lifetime risk: 1 in 143 in the US <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are 12 different molecular types of multiple myeloma, each with their own risk levels<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms? <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bone pain (in the back or ribs) <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequent infections<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Easy bruising or bleeding<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some patients have no symptoms<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatments?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 types of treatments for myeloma\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>Chemotherapy and medications<\/li>\n<li>Bisphosphonates<\/li>\n<li>Radiation<\/li>\n<li>Surgery<\/li>\n<li>Stem cell transplant<\/li>\n<li>Plasmapheresis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myeloma is relapsing-remitting cancer, meaning there are periods when the myeloma is causing symptoms and times where there are no symptoms or treatment required<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Want to learn more?
